In light of the new Coronavirus pandemic, insecurity regarding sharing spaces and gym equipment can discourage exercise routines. Is it time to stop training?
On the contrary. THE physical activity contributes to our mental and physical health. The recommendation of the World Health Organization (OMS) is 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of high intensity, per week, for adults in quarantine, without symptoms or diagnosis of acute respiratory disease.
The thesis of the benefits of routine physical activities is reinforced by several studies and research. Likewise, the clinical psychologist Vânia Vidal (CRP: 106184) points out that exercises can be tools for a calmer passage through this moment:
“The pandemic and quarantine scenario contributes greatly to the fluctuation of emotions. Feelings of fear, anguish and anxiety are heightened. Regular physical exercise releases endorphins, the hormone responsible for the feeling of well-being and reward, increasing our motivation, joy and disposition. When exercising we also produce more serotonin, the affective stabilization hormone, which helps a lot to reduce stress and anxiety.”
Therefore, regular physical exercise not only contributes to the quality of biological health, but also to improving the mind.
The scenario is completely favorable for practicing physical activities. They can be carried out with equipment installed indoors, in gyms, or in the condominium’s own gym, by adopting hygiene and social distancing measures, such as constant cleaning and alternating users with scheduled times.

Social isolation is a resource to avoid further burdening the health system. However, social distancing measures can encourage a sedentary lifestyle and incite emotional and physical dysfunction.
“As gyms that are open to all members of the public need to follow the government’s opening and closing rules, this may end up discouraging some practitioners. But there are infinite possibilities for maintaining your training routine. And to ensure efficiency and safety, it is always important to seek professional guidance in all the choices you make, from selecting the training, food and especially the equipment you will use”, he concludes.
